7 Tips For An Eco-Friendly Environment

As we hear about climate change, dwindling natural resources and other environmental issues, it can be overwhelming. What can you do to live a greener, more eco-friendly lifestyle? In this article we will explore some tips to having a eco friendly environment.

1. Remember That Everything Counts

Environmental issues may seem large, but they are the result of decisions made by millions of people every day. You can only focus on what you can do, so remember that all of your actions can reflect your decision to create an eco friendly home or workplace environment.

2. Use Energy Efficient Bulbs

This can save you money on electric bills and conserve energy. Energy efficient bulbs last many times longer than ordinary ones. Of course, it also helps to not leave lights on when they aren't needed.

3. Consider Transportation Alternatives

More energy efficient cars, including hybrids are now available. You can often reduce the amount of driving you do by carpooling, taking public transportation or, for shorter distances, walking or bicycling. Scooters and mopeds are other options.

Remember, it's not "all or nothing." Even if you need a large vehicle for some tasks (if you have a large family, for example), you can consider alternatives for times when you don't need the car, truck or SUV.

4. Shop Locally

By shopping locally, you are helping to support your local economy. You are also reducing energy consumption. It takes a lot of fuel to transport items across the country or around the world!

5. Go Paperless

As much as possible, that is. Excessive paper use contributes to the death of forests around the world. You can accomplish many things, such as paying bills, online now. You can read many newspapers and magazines online as well. You can request to be removed from junk mail lists. Do you really need all that paper cluttering up your house?

6. Learn about Gardening and Composting

You can grow your own vegetables and learn about composting, which is a great way to recycle many food waste products. If you create an organic garden, you will also learn about natural, non-toxic ways to repel pests. This can also be a money saver if you eat what you grow!

7. Use Gentle Cleaning Products

Many commercial cleaning products, such as detergents and household cleaners, contain harsh chemicals. These can be toxic to humans and pets, and also cause environmental damage when they enter the soil and water. Use organic cleaning products instead. You can also use natural, inexpensive household products like lemon juice, baking soda and vinegar for many cleaning tasks.
